overview.
An annual event that we have been involved as the creative studio, for 5 years now. 2010 proved the quirkiest brief yet with diverse influences leading to a fun exploration of design solutions, and then the lovely opportunity to roll the identity out to a suite of collateral!
brief.
A creatively stimulating project: a completely independent design is required annually for the Engineering Excellence Awards branding. Design needs to be fresh and contemporary, steering clear of cliched engineering imagery and instead referencing often quite eclectic themes. 2010 influences included hard edged graphic lines found in japanese anime comics alongside the theatrical textures, colours and flight of fancy feel from Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland.
solution.
In creating this identity, the focus was to move away from a literal interpretation and work on an abstract feel which combined the depth and richness of colours from Alice in Wonderland, with the anime inspired repetitive patterns and strong graphic lines.
New branding is essential to create a renewed wave of interest and excitement for the approaching awards event and on the awards evening itself. The branding is then rolled out across invitations, table placements, award certificates, program booklet and press ads.
Key elements to support the theme, increase aesthetic appeal and impact were:
- Colour Contrast. The contrast of black and red against the pattern works to create depth and the flight of fancy feel, as if falling down the rabbit hole. The vivid blue behind the event title highlights key information for maximum impact.
- New format. A wrap around was developed for the program booklet enhancing the reveal effect and playing on the layering and depth developed in the identity graphics. The internal layout also played upon elements established in the identity to create a varied and dynamic flow of information.
